Romanian AgriFood Startups 2024: Challenges, Opportunities and Innovation

How can Romania's AgriFood sector transform to meet global challenges and support sustainable economic development? What obstacles do entrepreneurs face, and what development opportunities are available to them? These are some of the key questions answered by the “Romanian AgriFood Startups Overview Report 2024”—a study conducted by Impact Hub Bucharest and Startarium, with the support of EIT Food.

Romania is one of the European countries with the largest agricultural land area and the highest percentage of employees working in the sector, which highlights the country’s significant potential in this field. Agriculture also has a notable impact on the national GDP.

However, Romania’s agricultural sector faces serious challenges that place increasing pressure on profitability and efficiency. These include climate change, which affects soil productivity, the lack of modern technologies, and an aging workforce. Moreover, the shortage of skilled labor continues to be a major barrier to the sector’s development.

Amid these challenges, Romania’s AgriFood sector is increasingly turning toward sustainability, innovation, and technology, aiming to reduce environmental impact and respond to new global realities such as climate change, overuse of natural resources, and the growing need to feed an expanding population. This transition to climate neutrality and the adoption of innovative solutions represent a clear development path for Romanian entrepreneurs in the field.

The “Romanian AgriFood Startups Overview Report 2024”, conducted by Impact Hub Bucharest and Startarium, with the support of EIT Food, explores these trends and analyzes the impact of AgriFood startups on Romania’s economy. Based on relevant data, the report offers an overview of the sector’s size, the challenges entrepreneurs face, and the available opportunities for innovation and growth. It also includes case studies that illustrate how agricultural and food businesses have evolved, as well as how startups in this sector are supported by the surrounding ecosystem.

Through this report, we aim to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of new technological initiatives and innovative solutions on the future of agriculture in Romania and the European Union.
