Romanian Green Startups 2024: Local Green Businesses Ecosystem Gains Traction

Impact Hub Bucharest and Startarium, together with partner Rompetrol and with the support of Climate-KIC, launch the fourth edition of the report on green startups in Romania: “Romanian Green Startups Overview Report 2024”. The report provides an overview of the current state of the ecosystem, legislation supporting green businesses, case studies, and key figures – all integrated within the European context.

As climate change accelerates and environmental crises intensify, the transition toward sustainability has become a global necessity. Concepts such as circular economy, ClimTech, CleanTech, and green entrepreneurship are no longer niche—they are transforming industries, European and national policies, and lifestyles. In Romania, the green startup ecosystem is gaining more and more traction, fueled by a skilled workforce, reforms aligned with European Union standards, and growing climate threats.

👉 Europe is the fastest-warming continent: the latest five-year averages show that temperatures here are 2.3°C above pre-industrial levels. In Romania, the average annual temperature has gradually increased since 1940, reaching 11.6°C in 2023.

The “Romanian Green Startups Overview Report 2024” marks the fourth edition of an annual initiative aimed at better understanding the green startup sector in our country. The report provides an overview of the current state of the key players involved, legislation supporting green entrepreneurs, case studies, and relevant data—all presented within the broader European context.

To develop this report, we analyzed businesses focused on sustainability, environmental protection, and the development of eco-friendly products, services, or technologies. The analysis is based on public data from 104 local green startups, insights from a quantitative and qualitative survey completed by 16 green entrepreneurs, and a series of in-depth interviews with green startup founders and experts from the field.

The conclusions of the “Romanian Green Startups Overview Report 2024” highlight that the main opportunities for Romanian green startups are driven by the expansion of the digital market (and the adoption of technologies such as AI, blockchain, and FinTech), the transformation of cities like Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Oradea, Iași, and Brașov into tech hubs, and increased access to European funding. In 2024, Romania recorded significant progress in the areas of circular economy, renewable energy, and biodiversity.

On the other hand, challenges remain—particularly the lack of adequate funding, limited access to venture capital funds, unfavorable legislation, and a high failure rate (20% of startups shut down within their first 2 years, and 45% within the first 5).
